Less than 2 weeks to go until Mothers Day!
If you are like me, and have Stitchin’ Mums, I want to share with you my favourite Mother’s Day Gift Ideas.
Over the years, many of my different Stitch-a-ma-jigs have begun as Mother’s Day gifts. I don’t want to say that Mum and Mother-In-Law are guinea pigs, however they are both wonderful test sewers, as Mum is a keen patchworker (and purveyor of fine fabrics and classes), and Jean (my Mother-In-Law) likes hand embroidery projects, knitting, and classes in her local area.
You may be looking for a gift for a stitcher, or looking for ides to prompt your loved ones with for your own Mother’s Day. Either way, allow me to share some of my favourite Stitchin’ gift Ideas…..
The Mums are definitely getting one of these in their bundle this year. The Portable Neck light is the hands free, LED illumination tool that goes anywhere. I love the way I can focus the light exactly where I need it, and it is great for in the car, caravan, or on the couch (we actually used ours last night to check out an scratch one of the children has.
Any stitcher needs storage, and a set of drawers that are perfect for storage of your threads may be just the gift that your stitchin’ mum needs. Edward purchased this for me for Christmas last year, and it is working wonderfully. We purchased ours from Ikea, from the Alex range, and it fits the smaller spools in the smaller drawers, and then the slightly taller spools in the bottom larger ones. The only issue that I have with this is that there is no storage for the massive thread spools, however Edward also picked up a 3 drawer set from the OpShop for $20, that holds these perfectly.

Antique Sewing Tools
Scour ebay, the OpShops, Tip Stores or your local buy-swap-sell, and you can generally find great deals on old fashioned sewing machines, or sewing tools. Imagine how happy your mum would be to have the machine or tools that her own mother/grandmother used. Over the years I have found an antique paper roller that I use as a stabiliser cutter, a vintage Singer Sewing Machine with table, and different tools along the way.
For a quick gift that any stitcher would love, give them the gift of storage with the gorgeous crafters USB’s. Available as either the tape measure, or scissors, these USB’s are funky, and bring a smile to all stitchers.
It doesn’t matter what type of embroidery machine you have, you can always do with a new hoop. I keep this as a standby gift if family cannot think of anything, because a spare hoop is a wonderful thing. It means I can hoop the next project, whilst stitching this one, and just makes my life easier. You can order extra hoops from your local sewing machine store.
The Fabric Laser Guide has been a hot seller for about a year now. It give you the perfect straight line, without having to re-position the ruler along the way.
A New Pair of Scissors
As the people who probably ruined her scissors when we were young, it seems only appropriate that we gift a gorgeous pair of quality scissors to our Mum on Mother’s Day. Search for a pair that she can keep and use for years to come.
This is the latest kit that is sweeping the internet for stitchers. A set of 4 different bias binding making tools, and a great foot for attaching the bias to the item. Set comes complete with binding clips, pins, and an awl for assisting in positioning the fabric.
You can never go wrong with a gift voucher. Last year my sister gave Mum a gift voucher to her favourite fabric store. Whilst Mum didn’t need any fabric, she spent the voucher on the thread that she loves for patchwork (which is nearly $15 per spool), and got enough thread to last her for at least 2 or 3 projects.
Keep it simple with these fun Stitchers Mugs. Perfect for taking to classes, they are a great gift idea, and go perfectly with the Sew I Said collection. Purchase a mug, and make Mum a mug rug to match it.
No matter what your skills, woodwork, crafting, sewing etc, there will always be something that you can create for your loved one. Check out Pinterest boards for ideas, such as this great stitchers desk organiser.
The Gift of Time
Give of yourself. Whether it be time to take Mum out to lunch, or time to sit and sew with her, most mothers would truly appreciate the gift of time. One of the suggestions on my list this mother’s day is to help me find a week to spend up at mums by myself, where mum and I can sew all week.
I hope this list helps you find ideas for the Mums in your life. At the end of the day, it matters far less what you give, than it does the intent that it is given with. Take at least this one day to show the Mums in your life just how much they mean to you.
Until next time, have a Stitchin’ Day. Julie.
