Hello, and welcome to another Friday Flashback. This week we are looking at a cute and quick collection, which I first created back in 2010 – Bye Bye Birdie.
I fell in love with the artwork for these little darlings back in 2010 – and I finished the collection in a few days. I loved the simplicity of the birds, and just how cute and round they were.
This was in the time when my daughters were still at home with me during the day (they were 4), and one of the things I loved? doing was having them “help” me stitch. They would come into the office, and sit there with the scraps of fabric, or watch the Bye Bye Birdie designs stitching out, and loved being the one picked to press the GO button on the machine to make it stitch. They loved these little birdies, because they were quick and fit into their attention span, and also, because I stitched a couple and allowed them to colour them in with pencils (another great way to keep them occupied).
Now I always have fun naming my collections, and this one was no different. I was brought up to be a lover of 50’s cinema, and I have fond memories of Ann Margaret singing the Bye Bye Birdie theme song in the movie on a Sunday afternoon.
I love quick designs, as they are a great way to jazz up a cheap t-shirt. These days, t-shirts for kids are under $5.00 – I could not make them for that. So my children always had embroidered t-shirts of whatever I was making at the time. These birdies were perfect on the t-shirts, and simply by using different colours, were customised for each child. As well as gorgeous little t-shirts for the girls to wear, I also created a quick quilt.
Using a layer cake as the blocks (already pre-cut), I stitched the design onto plain white fabric, and attached the blocks to the layer cake , using my Circular Sewing Attachment, and a wide satin stitch. I love how this one came together, and makes a really fresh looking quilt.
Initially when I created the Bye Bye Birdie collection, we gave away a design in this collection as a freebie. You can access this design HERE. As a thank you to all of our loyal customers, for the next week we are also offering a second Bye Bye Birdie design as a free download. Simply click HERE to collect your copy.
Thank you for taking this trip down memory lane with me, I hope you have enjoyed looking at this collection, and that it has inspired you to try some of these beautiful Birdie designs.
Until next time, have a Stitchin’ Day. Julie
